A Basic Guide to Laptop Security
Laptop is a lovely gadget. It is mobile, comfortable, powerful, and easy to travel with. These days, laptop is a close friend of the owner; it may accompany you wherever you go. Not surprising because it provides an easy environment to work in. The feature of technology and capability of storing data make it very valuable.
You may often feel worried when carrying a laptop during the trip, because a lot of thieves at this time. When you lose your laptop, it makes you very sad, especially when there is important information or data stored on it. For that you must always be vigilant to your laptop security.
There are at least three aspects of security for your laptop, physical security, data security and security awareness.
Physical security
- When you bring a laptop on traveling avoid using a laptop case, this can make it obvious that you’re carrying a laptop, it would invite attention to the thief. You’d better to use a carrying bag that does not look like a laptop case. To be safer use a special backpack for laptops. Now, such backpacks are available in the stores.
- When you work and you must leave the laptop, for any reason does not leave the laptop without the safety equipment, even for a short time. You can use a security cable that can be tied to a strong non-movable and unbreakable object, this make the thief difficult to take.
- Don’t leave the laptop in the car. If visible, it invites the thief to pick it up and you may loose not only your laptop, but you also have to pay for the damage of your car.
Data security
- The first security layer to your data is setting up a BIOS password. Your laptop will not boot until a proper password is entered.
- Current operating systems support proper login settings. User login may protect your laptop from unauthorized user. You should change the password as frequently as possible.
- Back-up your data regularly. Save your backup disks or any hardware evidences separately from your laptop. Provide the same security level as the original data.
- EFS (Encrypting File System) is a powerful encryption system. The EFS adds an extra layer of security for drives, folders, or files. This will help prevent hackers from accessing files by physically mounting the hard drive on other PC and taking ownership of files. So, do not forget to enable encryption on folders, not just files.
- Don’t forget to activate the screen lock when you left for a while.
Security awareness
- You should take the right step before your laptop disappeared. Put your identity: name, address and phone number in a place on your laptop. When your laptop is left accidentally in a cab or a hotel, there is a chance you will get it back.
- Record your serial number in a separate place. You will need this to prove ownership of any laptop that is found.
- Register your laptop to the manufacturer. You can contact them if your laptop is stolen, so if the thief ever sends it for repair, you will be notified.
- Take special care when traveling with your laptop, remain under the supervision on it at all times.
- You may consider insuring your laptop against loss, damage, or other disaster.
